<datacite:description descriptionType="Abstract">The purpose of this study is to reevaluate the social influence of a case of Japanese immigrants’ approach to Brazil’s national integration model, as part of showing the diversity of the self-representation of Japanese immigrants in Brazil after World War II. Rokuro Koyama, a Brazilian Japanese immigrant who noticed similarities between the Japanese and indigenous peoples since the beginning of his immigration, compiled a small dictionary of Japanese and indigenous words in 1951, when the internal conflicts within the Brazilian Japanese immigrant community over the defeat of Japan in World War II were still occurring. While previous studies have evaluated Koyama’s discourse on the kinship between Japanese and indigenous peoples as unique in its attempt to bring Japanese immigrants closer to the image of indigenous peoples, something that has been an important element of Brazil’s national integration model since the 1930s, they deny its social influence. In this study, I used Japanese language newspapers and other sources as objects of analysis in order to examine the publication and distribution of the writings of Koyama, the spread of Koyama’s theory in Japanese language newspapers, and the possibility of the spread of Koyama’s theory to Brazilian society, thereby demonstrating that Koyama’s theory had a certain degree of social influence at the time.</datacite:description>
