This has been an important assignment for both the prefectural government and Okinawan citizens. The Philippine government and Philippine citizens succeeded in not extending the presence of the military bases on Philippine territory by denying in 1991 a new treaty for continuation of the U.S.- Philippine bases. The Philippine government and Philippine citizens have been constructing free trade zone projects on the sites of former major U.S. bases - Subic Naval Base and Clark Airfield. It is a likely model for Okinawa.
