| 内容記述 | 日本における英語教育は、混乱をきわめています。文部科学省は、二年後の小学校での英語教育の義務化に向けて準備を進めていますが、このような無理な施策が導入される背景には、多くの日本人が漠然と抱いている、英語教育に対する誤解、たとえば、語学は低年齢であればあるほど早く身につく、ネイティブでないと正しい英語が教えられない、等の思い込みがあると思われます。本講演では、外国語教育における教師と学習者の役割、学習過程、何を第一に教える/学ぶべきかについて、サイレントウェイ理論が提唱する｢コモンセンス(賢さ)に基づく外国語教育｣という立場から考えます。そして、この考えに基づき、英語教育について日本人が抱く｢常識｣のいくつかを、検討します。最後に、このアプローチに基づく私自身の英語教育の実践について、簡単に述べます。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | English education in Japan is in a mess. MEXT has been preparing for the introduction of mandatory elementary school English scheduled in 2011. The introduction of this kind of reckless policy should be seen against a background of some common misconceptions about English language education held by the Japanese public. Many of them, for example, vaguely believe that the younger a learner is, the faster he/she masters a new language; some also believe that only native speakers of English can teach proper English. In this lecture I discuss the roles of the teacher and the learner, learning processes, and the essential aspects of a language to be taught/acquired in the foreign language classroom, in the light of 'the common sense of teaching foreign languages' advocated by the Silent Way approach. Following this discussion, I examine some of the common ideas Japanese have about English education, The talk is then concluded with a brief description of my teaching activities using this approach. | |||||
