Three individuals made presentations on the topic of the meeting, \"Teachers' class organization skills and the securement of academic abilities.\" Their presentations were followed by a plenary discussion.The outlines of the presentations are as follows: While the results of the National Achievement Tests continue to show that students/pupils in Okinawa rank low in the percentage of correct answers, there are ongoing efforts to secure academic abilities of children on the part of both schools and the educational administration. As the improvement in the teachers' capabilities to orgamze classes lead to academic abilities in the children, schools offer in-house courses to improve teachers' in-class skills, and training programs are organized by boards of education with the same aims. Meanwhile, pioneering studies on \"effective schools\" being conducted in other prefectures present suggestive data towards devising certain measures to raise the academic abilities of children in Okinawa.
