Because he was good at writing poetry and calligraphy, and also was a big man with a good-looking and elegant character, he was appointed as a vice diplomatic envoy to the Ryukyu Kingdom by Emperor Kangxi in 1718. Xu Baoguang stayed in Ryukyu for about nine months from June 1,1719 to February 26,1720. During this period, he wrote 196 poems on Ryukyu's natural scenery, Shuri Castle, the guest house for the diplomatic envoy, the temples, and so on, in the intervals of his official business. Since a lot of previous records and old buildings were destroyed by fire during a war, Xu's poems have become very important historical material for knowing the Ryukyu Kingdom.
