In the experiment, the study manipulated the phonological similarity and semantic relatedness between Chinese and Japanese as independent factors and observed their facilitatory effects. The results demonstrated that activation spreads through the link from Japanese to Chinese representations and vice versa when the levels of phonological similarity and semantic relatedness are high. Through the link, Chinese representations doubly activated Japanese representations. Furthermore, the results revealed that activation in auditory processing is unidirectional, whereas that in visual processing is bidirectional. Moreover, the findings suggested that the processing of Chinese-Japanese homographs depends on the extent of semantic processing required and on the presentation modalities.
