Some areas and villages of the island are relatively isolated, as are some of the islands in the surrounding sea. Health services are provided from health clinics throughout the area, and health personnel working in them face difficulties in participating in continuing professional education. The university, working with telecommunications providers and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, used a web-based telecommunication system in developing support for the practicum programs for nursing students and life-long education programs and progress reporting for nurses. After testing the system and training local personnel in its use, we applied the system in remote education for nursing students and found it particularly effective when linked with conferences at practicum training sites. The system's very clear two-way audio and visual communications were very effective for presentations by the nursing students, and also for presentations by nurses in the field participating in continuing nursing education,progress reporting, and
