PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is, by measuring electromechanical delay and muscle reaction times in extension and flexion of trunk for the older and young adults, to investigate the characteristics of the older adult's electromechanical delay and muscle strength in comparison to those of the young adults. METHODS: A group of 32 healthy older women (mean age: 74.3±5.4 years) and a group of 12 healthy young women (mean age: 19.2±1.2 years) subjects gave informed consent for participating in this experiment. In addition, we classify the older women into two groups: the ones who young-old (N=20) and the ones who old-old (N=12). The trunk extension strength and trunk flexion strength are performed by using a dynamometer (KinCom 500H). Moreover, it is performed under the condition of eccentric muscle actions. The start of reaction in measurement of electromachanical delay is performed the proprioceptor response in eccentric muscle action. RESULTS: The main results are as follows: Electromechanical delay and pre-motor time of the young-old and the old-old in trunk extension are significantly less than the young. Similarly, in trunk flexion, there is significant difference between the young-old or the old-old and the young. However, electromechanical delay of the between young-old and old-old in trunk flexion is no significant difference (young-old: 106.4 ±14.5ms, old-old: 108.2±9.5ms). CONCLUSION: These results suggested that functions of the trunk flexion are influence of the aging may be greater than those of the trunk extension.
