During the Reversion era, the Okinawan people campaigned to completely apply the Japanese constitution to Okinawa, to cancel Article 3 of the San Francisco Peace Treaty and eventually to remove the U.S. military bases from Okinawa. However, although Okinawa did return under Japanese constitution, the U.S. military bases remained due to Japan-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty. Okinawan people discovered a gap between Pre-Reversion deemed and Post-Reversion reality.
