The aims of the Reversion Movement were to fully apply the Japanese constitution, to protect human rights, to oppose the Japan-U.S. Mutual Security Treaty, to remove U.S. military bases, and to raise the Okinawan standard of living to the same level as that of mainland Japan. Okinawa regained Japanese sovereignty on May 15, 1972, and its standard of living has been steadily increasing each year. However the Japan-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty still applies, and the U.S. militaly bases remain.
