She became an independent republic by signing the Free Association Compact with the United States on January 1, 1994. Although Palau has a non-nuclear clause in her constitution which had been highly acclaimed internationally, she allowed the United States to build military bases on her territory for 50 years. On the other hand, she was successful in gaining a large amount of economic aid from the United States. Palau's political process toward independence shows several problems small island states encounter as they seek political autonomy.
