To model this situation, a series of scanned images progressively displaced by a fraction of a pixel are compared, and the evolution of individual pixel values analysed. First the response of the scanner is tested for linearity. We then consider the theory of retrieving the position, width and colour of monochrome linear objects narrower than a single pixel. It is shown that theoretically as few as three images suffice to determine these three data for a sub-pixel width horizontal object, subject to certain conditions.
