| 内容記述 | This paper is designed to capture true pictures of the relationship between the two main characters, Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley, in The Sun Also Rises (1926). My analysis goes against the recent trend of Hemingway studies influenced largely by feminist theory and gender studies since the 1980s. These critics tend to maintain the necessity of rereading the novel in the light of sexuality and gender. Yet I insist that their mutual love is not consummated not because of a social norm that denies a homosexual relationship but because of Hemingway's specific intention to illustrate the social anomy resulting from World War 1. In other words, the fact that heterosexual activities work no longer metaphorically represents social disorder in the postwar era. In analyzing concepts of love and marriage in Western society and Brett's sexual impulse mainly, I conclude that the impossibility of heterosexual acts between Brett and Jake is indispensable for the modernist text mirroring anomy. For this literary design, Hemingway did not purposefully make use of homosexual pleasure. | |||||

| 内容記述 | 1980年代以降のヘミングウェイ研究は、フェミニズム理論、ジェンダー批評の台頭によって様々な解釈が提示されるようになっているが、『日はまた昇る』(1926)批評においても多くの研究者は、セクシャリティ・ジェンダーの視点から再読の必要性を促している。本論文では、このような昨今のヘミングウェイ批評の流行に対して、反論を試みた論考である。ブレットとジェイクの恋愛関係は、同性愛的な性的志向が抑圧された社会環境が原因で成就しないのではなく、西洋の伝統的価値観の根底の一部である異性愛的営みの不成立は、第1次世界大戦の社会的価値崩壊・混乱(アノミー)を端的にかつ的確に表象する文学的装置(メタファー)として機能している。本論文では、西洋における愛と結婚の概念とブレットの性衝動の複雑な心理状態の相関関係を分析し、登場人物の実像、特にブレットの性的志向、を正確に捉える分析を行った。両者のつのる深い愛とブレットの性的放蕩は、このモダニスト・テキストにとって最も重要な成立条件であり、ヘミングウェイは故意に同性愛的な性的営みを描かなかったと結論付けた。 | |||||
