| 内容記述 | This study intends to investigate factors causing a decline in English proficiency of university freshmen, including expectations and study habits, and motivation for English learning. The study was conducted in May, 2006. The target group was 388 private university freshmen enrolled in three departments, who were assigned to 15 different English classes according to the their level. The questionnaire was given by six teachers and the analysis was made by the writer. First, the results showed that most incoming freshmen had not reached the expected English level of a university student. Secondly, a strong relationship was shown between English proficiency and the number of hours of English class the freshmen had received in senior high school. However, a strong relationship between learning attitudes and English proficiency was not found. Furthermore, a high ratio of students were found to be satisfied with their textbooks, class pace and classmates. In addition, expectations for English learning were shown to be related to future occupations and qualifications. Lastly, students' expectations for class were shown to be consistent with the goals of the English program at the university. Further qualitative studies should investigate factors of demotivation for students' English learning. | |||||

| 内容記述 | 本稿は大学1年次英語プログラムに於ける英語力の低下を招いている要因や、大学での英語学習の実態や動機、英語学習に対する1年次の期待を検証することを目的としている。調査は2006年5月に実施され、調査対象は国内の一私立大学の3学科に入学した15クラスのレベルに分けられた388名の1年次である。アンケート調査は担当の6名の教員によって配布と回収がなされ、集計と分析は筆者によってなされた。調査結果は、第一に、調査対象の1年次は、全体的に大学生として期待された英語能力に達していないことを示した。第二に高校での英語授業時間と英語能力の強い相関が見られた。しかし、英語能力と高校での英語学習態度との強い相関関係は見られなかった。第三に、英語レベルに関わらず大学での英語学習の時間が非常に少ないことが分かった。第四に、高い割合の学生が大学でのテキストや授業の速度、教師、クラスメイトに満足していることが分かった。第五に、学生の英語学習への期待は、将来の職業や資格に関連した項目の回答が多かった。最後に、学生の英語学習の期待は、調査大学の英語プログラムの目標と整合性があることが明らかになった。調査前の予想に反して大学での授業に対する満足度は高かったが、今後は学生の英語学習の動機を低下させている要因について質的な調査をする必要がある。 | |||||
