| 内容記述 | The Republic of the Philippines is the second populous country in ASEAN-10. I served three years in the Philippines in the late 1980s as a professor at the University of the Philippines and as an economist at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Therefore, I have been an avid Philippine watcher in Japan. My latest article on the Philippine economy was published in The Economic Development of Asia (Bunshindo, 2010) which has been used as a textbook in Japanese universities. This latest essay on the Philippines was written after the President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" C. Aquino 3 was sworn in as the country's 15th Chief Executive. Aquino, at age 50, is one of the youngest presidents ever elected into office in the Philippines. His campaign coloryellow - is associated with his mother. the late President Corazon C. Aquino, who was a symbol of the 1986 "Peoples Revolution" that spontaneously occurred against Ferdinand Marcos' (1969 - 1986) dictatorship. Aquino won his presidential election by a landslide margin. I watched Aquino's inauguration ceremony on CNN which took place in Manila's famous Rizal Park. I joined singing with the spectators with classic Filipino patriotic songs like "Bayan Ko." "Minamahal Kong Pilipinas," and the inauguration song titled "Bagong Pilipino." The inauguration of President Aquino had also instilled a new sense of hope and confidence across the land. In his inauguration speech, Aquino mentioned, "If no one is corrupt, no one will be poor." The corruption and poverty have been Philippines' most pressing issues for decades. Aquino determined by saying, "I accept your marching orders to transform our government from one that is self - serving to one that works for the welfare of the nation." The latest economic indicators show the positive figures on the economy, such as exceptionally robust industrial sector recovery, benign inflation, continuing export rebound, and steady growth in overseas Filipino workers remittances, to name some, have contributed to the much improved business and consumer confidence. Supported by good economic performances since his inauguration, Aquino's popularity is still high unlike the Japanese Prime Minister. | |||||
